Wind vs. Word

Discussion Guide

Conversation Starters

  • Which fight would you rather take: you versus a shark, you versus a bear, you versus a crocodile, or you versus a lion?
  • It’s you versus a pro — you can challenge any professional athlete to whatever you want. Go!
  • Pastor Steven wanted to be a weatherman when he was younger. What are some things you wanted to be when you grew up?

Review

Ask eGroup members to share their favorite points from the sermon, what spoke to them, a phrase or moment from the sermon they related to the most, or questions they have. If members have a hard time recalling the sermon, talk through your notes and share your favorite points.

Make It Personal

  • On a scale of 1-10, how much do you think about what might happen? (1 is never, 10 is all the time) Are you more of a thinker or a doer?
  • Read Ecclesiastes 11:4. The point of this passage is that farmers who are focused on controlling the weather will never get anything done. Has there ever been a time in your life when “watching the wind or the clouds” kept you from doing something?
  • Sometimes we’re watching the wind because we’re waiting for the right time, but God’s timing is different than ours. Have you ever been frustrated by God’s timing? Why can it be easy to trust Him but hard to trust His timing?
  • Read Matthew 14:25-32. Why do you think Jesus didn’t stop the wind before He told Peter to come? How does that encourage or challenge you?
  • What are some ways you watch the wind? Where does it feel like the wind is against you right now?
  • Pastor Steven said we should “check the weather, but not watch it.” What’s the difference between them? Share with the group some thoughts you have when you’re “watching the weather.”
    • What impacts do those thoughts have on you? Why is it tempting to watch the weather anyway?
  • Read Deuteronomy 8:2, Isaiah 46:9, Psalm 77:11, and John 14:26. The Bible tell us multiple times to remember what God has said and done. (Invite group members to share other passages or characters who remembered what God said/did.) How does remembering what God’s said and done for you help you trust Him in the present?
  • When is it easiest for you to trust God’s Word? When is it hardest?
  • What are some ways you’re receiving the Word on a regular basis so you have its foundation in your life? Are there any ways we can grow in this as a group?
  • What practical ways can you trust the Word and move away from overthinking things?

Act On It

Forecasts change — God’s Word doesn’t.
Think about a situation where you’ve been watching the wind in your life. What does God’s Word say about that situation? This week, find a Bible passage that encourages you to believe God’s Word in that situation. Share that passage with at least one person outside your group.

Prayer Requests & Prayer

Ask eGroup members to share any prayer requests they have. Record any notes or prayer requests to pray for members during the week.
Father, thank You for being a God who can do all things but fail. The next time it gets windy and we’re tempted to watch the forecast, remind us who You are and what You’ve said. Take us into a deeper level of trust with You so we can focus on doing Your will instead of worrying or wondering what might happen. In Jesus’ name, amen.
