Conversation Starters

  • What was your nickname growing up?

  • What’s your go-to worship song right now?

  • Imagine you were chosen as a travel guide for your hometown. Where’s one place you’d recommend people visit?

  • Have you ever wished you could change your name? If so, what would your new name be?

Discussion Questions

  • Read Matthew 16:16-18. In this passage, Jesus gives Simon a new name and identity by calling him “Peter.” Still, Simon Peter was challenged by these two extreme parts of himself. What extremes can you identify within yourself?

  • Sometimes we use extreme language like “always” and “never” when speaking to other people. What are some words you tend to use that could be harmful to yourself or others?

  • LB gives us a glimpse of some extreme parts of his personality. He reminded us we can continue to grow in Christ daily even when we battle with the extreme parts of ourselves. How does this encourage you?

  • LB shared that one of the main ways we hear from God is through His Word. He said, “We will struggle to hear from God when we are divorced from His word.” Can you identify a time you heard from God through Scripture? Or can you identify a way to incorporate the practice of reading your Bible more into your daily life?

  • We each play an internal game of “Simon Says” throughout our week. After listening to this week’s sermon, how might you handle this differently?

  • LB said, “Growth in your faith is measured in a calendar, and not on a clock.” This means we won’t go from being Simon to becoming Peter overnight. Our growth is a process that takes time. What is one practical step you can take this week to start seeing growth take place in your life?

Act On It

Let’s balance the extremes! Write down three times you listened to the voice of Simon this week (e.g., the amount of times you gossip, entertain negative thoughts, etc.). Now write down three times that you listened to the voice of Peter this week (e.g. living generously, spending time in the Word, etc.). What are some ways you can continue to live out the Peter moments and grow through the Simon moments?

Prayer

Father, we thank You for forming our identity in You. As Your children, we can listen to Your voice and find peace. Help us balance the extreme parts of ourselves, so we can walk in a posture of victory. Remind us of what our own voice sounds like compared to Your Holy Spirit. Thank You for Your grace as we grow to learn the difference. In Jesus’ name, amen.
