Death By Echo
Sermon Summary
Sometimes the loudest voice in your life is the one in your own head. In this sermon, Pastor Steven preaches from Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19 to show us how exhaustion and isolation can cause us to replay the wrong things. But when fear tells us to run, we can “run it back” and remember what God has already done. Even when we’re tired, discouraged, or don’t have the words to pray, God is still with us. We learn how to stop living in the echo of our past, listen for God’s voice, and step out of the cave into what He’s calling us to next.
Sermon Highlights
Pastor Steven summarized the sermon with three points:
He didn’t really pray (Elijah didn’t actually ask God to do anything about it).
God came anyway (Even though Elijah didn’t ask, God still saw him).
He didn’t stay (When God spoke, Elijah moved).
The part you replay has a lot to do with how you feel.
Is it possible that the thing you’re worried about is never even going to happen? Elijah doesn’t die.
A real prayer is when you can go from saying how it is to how God can make it different.
When you feel empty you have to get intentional because if you don’t fill that space, the enemy will.
When you’re empty you forget your victories and fixate on your enemy.
Run it back right.
A cave is a place where you feel safe, but it makes you more anxious.
Elijah didn’t really pray in the cave, and God came anyway.
When you reply with “I” it fills the cave so you can’t hear the whisper.
It’s not the threat that kills me, it’s the way I let it echo.
I’m choosing to live by the whisper.
Glossary
“Thanksausted” is when you’re thankful, but exhausted.

This is the 5th sermon in the series, I Know That Voice. Which one has been the most meaningful to you so far?
It's Hard To Hear God – Have you been wondering how to hear God's voice? If disappointment, comparison, fear, or uncertainty have made it difficult to know your next step, this message from Pastor Steven Furtick will help you discover what the Bible says about recognizing, trusting, and obeying God's direction.
When Jesus Is Your Jury – What is the voice in your head saying about you? When you’re wrestling with self-limiting beliefs, it’s tempting to try to impress people to prove yourself. But that only fuels the unfulfilling cycle of performance. Pastor Steven teaches us how to find freedom from human opinion and reach a new verdict about our worth so we can walk in our purpose.
Take Your Notes On The Boat! – Have you ever wished God would explain why you're going through something? You don't always need a new word from God — sometimes you need to remember the one He's already spoken. If you've been looking for peace, clarity, or confidence in a difficult season, discover how God's Word can help you trust Him even before you have all the answers.
What If I Got It Wrong? – Is it wrong to doubt God? When we face resistance, or God doesn’t come through like we’re expecting, it’s natural to wonder if we heard Him wrong. But it turns out that doubt isn’t really the problem. It’s what you do with your doubt that matters.
Death By Echo (Run It Back) – What’s been on your mind? Sometimes the loudest voice in your life is the one in your own head. In this sermon, Pastor Steven teaches from Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19 and shows us what to do when fear, exhaustion, and discouragement get loud.
Discussion Questions
“Is it possible that the thing you’re worried about is never even going to happen? Elijah doesn’t die.” Can you think of a time you were very worried about something and it never happened?
“The part you replay has a lot to do with how you feel.” What’s been replaying in your mind lately? Do you see any connection between that and how you’ve been feeling?
“When you feel empty you have to get intentional because if you don’t fill that space, the enemy will.” What are some ways we can fill that space so we can hear God’s whisper instead of our own echo?
eGL note: This is a high vulnerability question. Only use it if your group is ready for it.
“A cave is a place where you feel safe, but it makes you more anxious.” What cave do you think God is calling you out of?“Replay the ravens. Run it back right.” Let’s have a praise break. What are some ways God has been faithful in the past or recently?
Prayer Activity
Pastor Steven said, “A real prayer is when you can go from saying how it is to how God can make it different.” Instruct your eGroup members to write down (paper or digital) a prayer to God, specifically asking Him for what they need. Once they finish, pray this over the group.
Dear Lord, we lift up these prayers to You. You’ve seen each one and know the weight each prayer carries. We bring these bold prayers of faith, knowing that we can trust You to come through and provide in even the darkest cave. We thank You for Your faithfulness and we believe we’ll see it again. Amen.
