It’s Not Fair
Pastor Robert Madu
Sermon Summary
Pastor Robert Madu used Jesus’ Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard from Matthew 20 to teach us how clinging to the wrong expectations can lead to disappointment. When life feels unfair, it’s easy to compare your story to someone else’s and wonder why things worked out differently. But peace comes when you stop measuring your life against other people and start trusting the character of God.
Sermon Highlights
Most of the pain and the frustration in our lives is not from what happened, it’s from what we expected.
What do you do when you feel like God is not being fair?
The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard:
The Landowner → God
The 6:00AM group → those who trust in compensation and contracts
The 5:00PM group → those who trust in the consistent character of God
God is not looking for spectators; He’s looking for workers.
God wants you to see other people get blessed. He wants to know, “Can you still trust me when you see somebody get something that you don't think they deserve?”
Who are you in the story? You may be a 6:00AM worker if you:
Always have a grumble
Expect what was never promised
Struggle to celebrate other people
Think God owes you
Are your complaints louder than your praise?
Don’t let your faithfulness become entitlement.
God doesn’t owe you anything because He already gave you everything.
Turn your entitlement into gratitude.
Gratitude is the antidote for complaining, for bitterness, and for being stuck.
Grace is not fair. Thank God we don’t get what we deserve!

Discussion Questions
“Most of the pain and frustration in our lives is not from what happened, it's from what we expected.” What’s an expectation you’ve been carrying that you need to surrender to God in this season?
“God wants to know, ‘Can you still trust me when you see somebody get something that you don't think they deserve?’” Where are you most tempted to compare your life to someone else's right now, and what would it look like to trust God's timing in that area?
“You know you're a 6:00AM worker when you always have a grumble, expect what was never promised, struggle to celebrate other people, or think God owes you.” Which of these four mindsets do you struggle with most often, and what’s one way you can replace that mindset with trust and gratitude this week?
“Turn your entitlement into gratitude.” What’s something you’ve taken for granted lately that you want to intentionally thank God for again?
“Grace is not fair. Thank God we don't get what we deserve!” How can remembering God's grace help you extend grace to someone else this week?
Prayer Prompt
Ask your eGroup if they have any prayer requests or praise reports they’d like to share, and include them in your closing prayer.
Pray this prayer over your eGroup to close, and/or send it to them throughout the week to let them know you’re praying for them!
Lord, thank You for Your undeserved grace that consistently loves us, saves us, and redeems us. When we struggle with unmet expectations, please help us prioritize Your trustworthiness over any outcome and gratitude over grumbling. Teach us not to lean on our own understanding but on Your truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
