Just The 2 Of Us
Pastor Steven Furtick
Hey leaders! You might have noticed the “Download PDF” button isn’t available to download/print the discussion guide. Our teams are working to get it fixed, and we’ll have it back up as soon as possible.
Conversation Starters
What’s your favorite older hymn or Christian song?
If you had to pick a celebrity to live with on a desert island for a year (just the two of you), who would it be?
It’s good to go back. If you could go back and relive one day or season of your life, what would you choose?
Review
Ask eGroup members to share their favorite points from the sermon, what spoke to them, a phrase or moment from the sermon they related to the most, or questions they have. If members have a hard time recalling the sermon, talk through your notes and share your favorite points.
Make It Personal
How does looking back help you move forward? Has it ever helped you through a particularly difficult situation or season?
Are there any things you used to see as privileges but now you feel like you “have to” do them? How could looking back help you with that?
Read 2 Kings 4:8-10. Why do you think God so often meets needs through people? Who are some key people God has used in your life?
How has God used you in someone else’s life?
Why do we sometimes turn to people instead of God to fill our needs? Are there areas where you’re doing this in your own life? (What are ways people might look for others to fill a need that only God can fill?)
What’s the danger of talking about our problems to people who can’t solve them? Is there a right or wrong way to do that? (When have you talked about a problem to someone who couldn’t help you solve it? Was it productive?)
Read 2 Kings 4:11-16. How do you identify with the Shunammite woman in this passage? Are there any areas where you’ve stopped hoping or things you’ve stopped asking God for? (Are there things you’ve decided you’ll just have to cope with? Why should we keep hoping even when it hurts?)
Think about the things you’ve stopped hoping for. What places are you staying in because of that? (e.g., shame, regret, bitterness, anger, etc.)
Read 2 Kings 4:20-34. The Shunammite woman showed trust by waiting outside the door while God dealt with her problem. What can you do in this season to show God you’re trusting His plan and His process?
Act On It
Pick one of these things from today’s passage to focus on this week:
2 Kings 4:16 — The Shunammite woman had stopped hoping. Do you need to hope for something again?
2 Kings 4:25 — The Shunammite woman went looking for Elisha. Do you need to seek some kind of help?
2 Kings 4:26 — The Shunammite woman wasn’t honest at first about her situation. Do you need to be honest with yourself or someone else?
2 Kings 4:33 — The Shunammite woman had to wait outside while God worked on her problem. Do you need to “worship outside the door” while trusting God’s plan and process?
Leader Tip
Leaders, take some opportunities this week outside of eGroup time to ask your group members, “Are you all right?” Help them feel seen and cared for so they know they can answer this question with transparency and vulnerability.
Prayer Requests And Prayer
Ask eGroup members to share any prayer requests they have. Record any notes or prayer requests to pray for members during the week.Father, thank You for the great things You do in our lives, the way You use others to meet our needs, and the way You use US to help others. Help us be mindful of those opportunities this week. Put people on our hearts and minds who we can support and show Your love to. In Jesus’ name, amen.
