Sermon Summary

Sometimes, even when you’re trying to do all the right things, you still end up in a dark place. But there is a King on the throne, and knowing He is with you can make all the difference in the world. Priscilla Shirer preaches from Revelation 4 to show us God’s invitation to lift our eyes to heaven and fight from victory in His Name.

Sermon Highlights

  • Sometimes, you’re living your life, not perfect, but purposeful. You’re trying to follow God. And you end up in Patmos anyway.

  • Knowing God is with you makes all the difference in the world.

A door was standing open – Jesus gives us access

  • There is always access to God’s power, presence, and peace in difficult situations.

  • Even when you close the door to God (Revelation 3), He’s so merciful that He’ll open it again for you (Revelation 4).

Come up here – Jesus gives us an invitation

  • Believers need to live in two places at the same time: with their feet firmly placed on earth and their minds fixed on things eternal.

  • Setting your mind above changes how you relate to all the difficult things on earth.

  • Before I make the decision, I’m accepting the invitation to come up here.

There is a throne – Jesus is seated in authority over all

  • Earth doesn’t have the final say. The King is seated on the throne, and the battle is won.

  • You’re gonna have to have some backbone and stand firm against the schemes of the enemy.

  • You’re not fighting for victory. You’re fighting from victory.

Scripture

Read this week’s scripture out loud to your group. Point out the phrases Priscilla focused on in her message today (in the highlights above).

Sermon Discussion

Conversation Starter

Choose the one that works best for your group!

  • Would you rather travel by car, train, boat, or plane? Why?

  • What was a game you enjoyed playing as a kid?

Discussion Questions

  • “There is always access to God’s power, presence, and peace in difficult situations.” What are some practical ways that you think we can access this?

  • “Knowing God is with you makes all the difference in the world.” Fill in this blank and then share why: Knowing God is with me in ________ makes all the difference in the world.

  • “Setting your mind above changes how you relate to all the difficult things on earth.” What area of your life do you need to “come up here” so you can get a heavenly perspective on it?

  • “Earth doesn’t have the final say. The King is seated on the throne, and the battle is won.” How can you invite the authority of Jesus into your week?

  • Bonus activity: If you have time, look up the location of Patmos, Greece, where John was exiled. It’s very far off the coast and gives good context for the devastating circumstances John was in, with no possibility of escape, when God gave him this revelation.

Prayer

Ask your eGroup if they have any prayer requests or praise reports they’d like to share, and include them in your closing prayer.

Pray this prayer over your eGroup to close, and/or send it to them throughout the week to let them know you’re praying for them!

Dear Lord, we take a moment to pause and remind ourselves that you are the King who is seated on the throne with authority over all things. As we invite You into the areas that feel dark or difficult to understand, I pray that Your presence will feel near. I pray that each person in this group is able to walk through this week a little more confident, remembering that the world doesn’t have the final say in their lives, You do. We thank You for swinging the door wide open to us, and I pray that we each accept the invitation to, “Come up here” to get heaven’s perspective this week. Amen.
