Sermon Highlights

  • There are always two things happening at the same time:

    • The physical reality of what we see

    • The certainty of the good that God is going to do

  • God developed Joseph’s character to match his calling.

  • We need to remind ourselves often: “I don’t know the whole story of my life.”

  • I want to know what’s going to happen. God wants me to know Him.

  • When we want to read the Bible least is often when we need to read it most.

  • What we don’t trust we will try to control.

  • Reflect on the moments that make you say: “I didn’t see it then, but I see it now.”

  • With God, there’s always a meanwhile.

  • Don’t wait until you feel brave. Go be brave.

Scriptures

  • Genesis 50:20 - “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…”

Sermon Discussion

Conversation Starter

  • This week, Lysa TerKeurst talked about how we don’t know the whole story when we’re in the middle of it. What’s the best “plot twist” you’ve either read in a book or seen in a show/movie?

Discussion Questions

  • “Reflect on the moments that make you say: ‘I didn’t see it then, but I see it now.’” What was an “I see it now” moment? Share how you saw God work through that moment in your life.

  • “With God, there’s always a meanwhile.” Where are you trusting that God is working in the "meanwhile" right now?

Additional Questions

  • “God developed Joseph’s character to match his calling.” How has God used past challenges to develop your character for the calling you’re walking in today?

  • “Don’t wait until you feel brave. Go be brave.” What can “being brave” instead of “feeling brave” look like for you this week?

Prayer Prompt

Ask this question to your eGroup and include it as part of your closing prayer:

Lysa taught us to remind ourselves of this truth: “I don’t know the whole story of my life.”

Ask your eGroup: what challenges are you currently facing that you don’t know the whole story to? Pray that each member would remember that God is always at work—even in the midst of our most challenging seasons. Pray they would remember that their story is still being written, and that God would give them a glimpse this week into how He’s using this hardship for both their own good and also the good of others.
