The Main Thing:

Spending time with Jesus through worship changes me.

Start Talking (Conversation Starter):

What’s a song you can guess almost immediately — even if you only hear the first few seconds? (Optional: Youth can play the first few seconds of a song they know well and see who in the group can guess it first.)

Explore the Scripture:

Read Matthew 14:22-33 together. Spend some time talking about the passage.

  • What words, phrases, or actions stand out?

  • What questions does this passage raise?

  • What’s God showing you about the passage?

  • What does this passage reveal about Jesus or people?

Look again at verses 32-33. After everything the disciples experienced, how did they respond to Jesus? Why do you think that is?

Unpack It:

Discuss what you read and what you heard.

  • What do you notice about Peter’s attention throughout this passage? What seems to shift his focus?

  • At the end of the passage, the disciples worship Jesus. What had they recognized about Him that led to that response?

  • How does this challenge your idea of what worship is? (e.g., Worship is more than just singing and music.)

  • Which verses challenge or encourage you most? What about the message challenged or encouraged you?

Own It:

Make the Scripture personal.

  • Think about what you regularly listen to or give your attention to. If you asked, “What is this producing in me?” what might you notice? Why is that important when it comes to spending time with Jesus through worship?

  • What could it look like for worship to become part of your everyday life?

  • How’s God calling you to apply what you read or what you heard?

Live It:

Take action to apply what you learned.

  • In your Leader Overview are three ways students can spend time with Jesus through worship. Talk about each one, and challenge your group to do one of them.

Prayer:

End your meeting by inviting someone to pray for the group to recognize who Jesus is, respond to Him through worship, and become more intentional about what receives their attention.
