High School Week 1 (March 4): Listening & Doing

February 25, 2026
96min. read
Youth

Series Overview:

There’s something powerful about realizing your faith isn’t meant to stay inside. What God is doing in you is meant to show up through your words, your choices, and even your prayers. Faith was never designed to be something you simply agree with — it’s something you live out.

James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

Listening is important, but obedience is what transforms us. God’s Word acts like a mirror. Just like a mirror shows the reflection of who we are, His Word shows us what’s true about who we are and who He’s calling us to become. The blessing isn’t in hearing it once a week; it’s in allowing it to shape how we respond every day.

In a culture that speaks fast and posts faster, James invites us into a different rhythm — one where we slow down, pray first, and let God’s truth guide what comes out of us. We’re not just talking about knowing scripture. We’re calling students to live it. To represent Jesus with intention. To let prayer shape their responses. And to step into a faith that is active, visible, and rooted in obedience rather than just information.

Series Verse:

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22

Discussion Goal:

Blessing comes from listening to God’s Word and living it out.

Start Talking (Conversation Starter):

If watching videos automatically made you an expert at something without ever having to actually DO it, what would you be an expert at by now? (e.g., football, cooking, solving crimes, etc.)

Think It Through (and Talk It Out)

Leader Tip: Choose questions that resonate with your group’s age, experiences, and current understanding. There’s no pressure to cover all the questions — pick the ones that fit your group the best.

Leader Say: “Think about how easy it is to listen to something inspiring — a sermon, a podcast, advice from a friend — and then go right back to living the same way. Information is everywhere. But information alone doesn’t change us. We need action.

In this series, we’re exploring the book of James to talk about what real faith and prayer look like in everyday life. James challenges us not to just hear God’s Word, but to live it — to let scripture and our prayers shape our reactions, our decisions, and even the way we speak. Faith isn’t meant to stay internal; what God is doing inside you is meant to show up through your words, your choices, and how the world sees you.

Over the next two weeks, we’ll explore what it looks like to move from reaction to intention — to stop living on autopilot and start living out what we say we believe. Because blessing isn’t found in knowing more. It’s found in doing what God says. Let’s talk about that!”

  • Read James 1:19-27. Pay special attention to verse 22. Why do you think James uses the word deceive? What are some ways we trick ourselves into thinking we’re growing in our faith when we’re actually not?

  • James compares God’s Word to a mirror (James 1:22-25). When you look in a mirror, it shows you what’s actually there — not what you wish was there.

    • What do you think God’s Word reveals about us?

    • Why do you think someone would look in a mirror and then walk away without changing anything?

    • What might “forgetting what you look like” look like spiritually?

    • How does living it out keep us from “forgetting”?

  • Where are some places in your life where it’s easy to know what’s right (in other words, you’re listening) but it’s hard to live it out? (e.g., school, friendships, family, online, etc.) What would intentional obedience (living it out) look like in that space this week?

Pray: God, thank You for speaking to us through Your Word. Help us to not just hear it but to live it. Show us where our actions don’t line up with what we say we believe. Give us courage to respond with obedience, not just agreement, so we can experience the blessing You want for us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Additional Questions

  • Read James 1:19. In this verse, James writes that everyone should be “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” Which of those is hardest for you? Why?

  • James tells us blessing comes from listening to God’s Word and living it out. What does blessing mean to you?

    • Read James 1:25. How does that change or challenge the way you see blessing?

    • ⬆️ Bible Bite: When scripture talks about blessing, it’s talking about more than just material things. Biblical blessing is also about alignment with God — living in step with His truth and experiencing the stability, peace, and purpose that come from that alignment. In James 1:25, we learn blessing comes through obedience. As we walk in obedience to God, we can experience a kind of blessing that has nothing to do with our circumstances — an inner contentment that can't be shaken. (See Matthew 5:3-12 for more perspective on what it means to be blessed despite your circumstances.)

  • Take a look at these passages that give us clear instructions on how to live. Which one is most difficult for you? What could change in your life if you challenged yourself to live it out?
