King Me

Discussion Guide

Conversation Starters

Looking for a way to get the group talking? Try one of these conversations’ starters.
  • When you were younger, what dreams of the future did you have? What did you want to be when you grew up and why?
  • Chet said he’s a very competitive person. Would you consider yourself a competitive person? Why or why not?
    • Leader tip: Feel free to have some fun here. How about a quick rock, paper, scissors competition, or some other activity?! Consider bringing a small prize for the winner.

Sermon Reflection

Help transition the group to the discussion with one of these questions.
  • What stood out to you from this week’s message?
  • What from the message encouraged you/challenged you the most?

Sermon Discussion

Select 1-2 themes from the sermon to discuss with your eGroup.
  • Being in charge isn’t a choice. Read Genesis 41:38-40. God puts us all in positions of authority, even if we don’t ask for it.
    • Chet said, “Sometimes God answers prayers we didn’t even know to pray for.” Share an example of a blessing God has given that you didn’t even ask for.
    • When we ask, “why are you making me do this?” God’s answer is, “I am making you (forming you).” What areas do you feel God forming and refining you right now?
    • Share an area of your life where you’re resisting leadership or responsibility and identify one step you can take this week towards that calling.
  • Being in charge isn’t about you. Read Genesis 39:2. Wherever Joseph went, he made a difference.
    • Can you think of someone who always makes a difference wherever they go? Share a little bit about that person and what you can learn from them.
    • Leaders, fill in the blank for your eGroup: Is your _____ (school, organization, family) better because you’re in it? How is God calling you to make a difference in that area of your influence?
    • We learned we get a double blessing when we don’t just receive from God, but also give back to God through serving and giving. Is God calling you to take a step towards serving or giving?
  • Being in charge isn’t the same as being in control. If Joseph were in charge of his life, he would have stopped certain challenges from happening to him.
    • What are you currently going through that you’d stop if you were in charge?
    • How do you see God using this challenging situation in your life?
    • “Releasing praise helps us experience God’s presence.” What’s a practical step you can take this week to keep you focused on praising God?

Activating Faith

Challenge your group to keep activating their faith. Make this a part of your eGroup time or send this activity to them after you meet.
Jesus is asking us to make Him King over our lives. Where have you been playing King, and where do you need to put Jesus back on the throne (family, finances, job, etc)?
On your phone or a piece of paper, write down areas of your life where you are taking control, are tired, or are trying to do it all on your own. Then take a minute to release those areas back into God’s hands as the King of your life, one thing at a time, by repeating this aloud:
“God, I give you control of _______ as the King of my life.”
And then picture yourself physically handing that thing over to God.

Prayer

Close out your group with prayer using one of these options
  • Guided Prayer:
    • Dear Father, thank you for the many blessings you have flowed into my life. Help me be the leader you’ve called me to be and to keep you as King over my life. Thank you that you are in control of every single situation in my life. Please help keep my eyes focused on you and your presence this week. Amen.
  • Interactive Prayer:
    • Bring note cards to pass out to your eGroup members. Have each group member write 1-2 prayer requests on the card. Then place them into pairs and swap notecards with each other to have them pray for each other over the week.
